Remix Artist Statement
There were so many interesting rhythmic fragments and melodic ideas in the improvisation that I wanted to develop in my remix. Lina's trumpet key clicks reminded me of clave rhythms in some places, so I took that as a starting point, lending the song a triple-meter feel. From there it wasn't hard to find cool bits of Nick's drums to loop, and gradually I constructed some melodies and shaped the structure. I wanted to maintain a loose, almost rubato feel while working within the confines of a set tempo, so I didn't quantize any of the drums. It was a lot of fun to reimagine this piece as groove-based music, using modern production elements like 808s to add some oomph.

This record at times is the sum of its parts and the strength of its parts. At times, you can plainly tell the player from 100 yards away with your eyes closed, but then you can hear them echoing the ghosts of those who came before them. An incredibly brilliant record from 3 master blasters! pjnewman-364
